Why isocyanates demand respect
Diisocyanates such as MDI, TDI and HDI are respiratory and skin sensitizers. After sensitization, very low exposures can trigger asthma attacks, and NIOSH has documented deaths. A NIOSH Alert focused on spray-on truck bed liners estimated that more than 10,000 US workers were potentially exposed to MDI in that work alone. Research also shows skin contact can contribute to sensitization, so respirators alone are not enough. See our research digest for sources.
Exposure limits (examples)
| Substance | Limit | Value |
|---|---|---|
| MDI | OSHA PEL | 0.02 ppm ceiling |
| MDI | NIOSH REL | 0.005 ppm TWA; 0.020 ppm 10-min ceiling |
| MDI | ACGIH TLV | 0.005 ppm TWA |
| 2,4-TDI | OSHA PEL | 0.02 ppm ceiling |
Spray aerosols can exceed these limits quickly, which is why exposure control relies on engineering controls and respiratory protection rather than distance alone.
Core controls for spray crews
- Respiratory protection: supplied-air respirators are commonly required for spraying isocyanate coatings; follow your respiratory protection program and fit testing.
- Skin and eye protection: chemical-resistant gloves, disposable coveralls with hoods and eye protection. Change contaminated PPE promptly.
- Ventilation and containment: spray booths, enclosures and exhaust where possible; consider wind and building air intakes outdoors.
- Controlled zones: barricade the spray area and keep unprotected people, including customers and bystanders, out until re-entry is safe.
- Medical surveillance and training: report symptoms like cough, wheeze or chest tightness early; sensitized workers usually must avoid further exposure.
EU training requirement
Under REACH restriction entry 74 (Regulation (EU) 2020/1149), since 24 August 2023 professional and industrial users of products containing more than 0.1% diisocyanates must complete certified training. The required level depends on the task, with high-energy spraying (such as spray foam and elastomers) and open-air spraying with limited ventilation falling in the advanced tier. Training must be renewed at least every five years.
