What it is

Carbon black is nearly pure elemental carbon in the form of very fine, aggregated particles, produced by incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons. It is listed as Pigment Black 7.

Role in coatings

It provides jet blacks and grays, tints other colors, and adds UV protection in black polyurea bedliners and liners. Conductive grades are used to make antistatic or conductive coatings.

Chemistry & key properties

Its tiny particles absorb light across the visible and UV spectrum, so small amounts tint strongly and shield the binder from UV damage. Its high surface area makes it hard to disperse and it can adsorb some additives and catalysts, which formulators account for.

Handling & storage

Carbon black powder is extremely dusty and combustible as a dust cloud. Use dust control and particulate respirators, and keep it away from ignition sources. Check the SDS for specific classifications.

Safety noteSummary information only. Always read the supplier’s Safety Data Sheet for the specific grade you use and follow local regulations.
FAQ

Common questions

Why are most polyurea bedliners black?

Black hides dirt and scuffs, and carbon black absorbs UV, which protects the aromatic polyurea binder and slows visible fading compared with lighter colors.

Can carbon black make a coating conductive?

Special conductive grades at sufficient loading can create conductive or antistatic coatings.
